Career Night a Success!

The Department of Library and Information Science’s Career Night / Research Symposium was an excellent event. Those who attended not only heard graduates of our program and other librarians in the field tell their career stories and give advice on finding a job and the future of the field, but also had an opportunity to network with current librarians in the field at the localized sites. Special guest, Donna Seckar, Director of the Career Services Center in Greensboro gave insightful advice on resume writing and interviewing and Professor Nora Bird gave a thought-provoking presentation on her research. Additionally, Dr. Jackson-Newsom and Dr. Chow gave insights into grant writing.

Here is what Dr. Anthony Chow said about the event, "I was extremely proud and impressed with how our community all came together to make this event a success - from the all of our wonderful speakers (Career Center, all of our alumni, and Julia Newsom-Jackson) to the instructors who canceled class so their students could attend, to all of the approximately 80 to 90 students that attended. Everyone who participated shared in the success of the event."

Dr. Hershberger, who eloquently and engagingly moderated the event remarked, "Not only was the LIS Career Night a success with over 90 students in attendance but as a longtime faculty member is was great fun to see some of our fabulous graduates (Kathleen Phillips, Joyce Weaver, Cathy DuPre, Christine Tran, Jennifer Taylor and Sue Spencer) but to also include Rosann Bazirjian and Tommy Waters from Jackson Library and Roanoke Public Library respectively on the panel was wonderful and a big thanks goes out to all of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend. Bringing the LIS community together for a night of information sharing is always a positive event but even better, it was a FUN evening as well."
