Dr. Bea Kovacs Retiring after 22 years
Dr. Beatrice Kovacs has been an integral part of the UNCG LIS Department for over 20 years. She earned her BA in English Literature from Syracuse University, her MLS from Rutgers University, and her DLS from Columbia University. Dr. Kovacs also taught at and Pratt Institute before coming to UNCG in 1985, and she taught courses for UNC Chapel Hill and University of South Carolina during the 1990s.
Students know Dr. Kovacs as an excellent advisor, as well as for regularly teaching Collection Management, The Special Library, and Science and Technology Information Sources. In fact, she is considered to be the Department’s long time link to Special Library communities, and the connection to the world of vendors. Dr. Kovacs has written several books, including The Decision-Making Process for Library Collections: Case Studies in Four Types of Libraries, Health Sciences Librarianship: A Guide to Information Sources (with Thomas G. Basler), and Using Science and Technology Information(with Ellis Mount).
Other highlights of Dr. Kovacs’ career include conducting a study of library facilities in local residential retirement homes, and designing and implementing the LIS department’s surveys of graduates and of employers. She also served as the President of the North Carolina Special Libraries Association, and received the Meritorious Achievement award in 2005. Dr. Kovacs served as the LIS Alumni Association faculty liaison for many years. Colleagues consider her to be the “historical memory” of the department, and the most impressively networked member of the faculty. In August 2007, Dr. Kovacs will be retiring and moving to “the pond,” a piece of property she and her husband own in Georgia. She does not plan to work after that.
