Careers in Library and Information Studies

Graduates of our program find careers in public and academic libraries as well as in information agencies serving government, business and industry, archives, museums, and a broad variety of other information-related areas. The program also offers preparation leading to licensure for school library media work through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Students entering the Master of Library and Information Studies program come with an equally broad array of undergraduate preparation and previous work experience. English, history, and education majors are well represented in the student population, but people with degrees in computer science, biology, chemistry, and sociology also enrich the diversity of the program. Any undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is good preparation for the program and for a successful career in library and information studies. We have many students holding advanced degrees who find the field offers rewarding careers in which they can build on their interests, expertise, and aspirations.
