The Department of Library and Information Studies provides an educational program leading to the Master of Library and Information Studies degree. The program emphasizes the rapidly changing library and information field and prepares students for positions of leadership in school, public, special, and academic libraries and other information centers, and for a variety of roles in both public and private agencies as information specialists.

The M.L.I.S. degree program is accredited by the American Library Association and is approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for the licensure of school library media personnel. The school library media specialist program is approved by NCATE using the AASL/ALA professional education association guidelines

The graduate program of study leading to a Master of Library and Information Studies degree is a minimum of 36 hours of coursework. This program assumes the student has a valid North Carolina teaching certificate. Students who are not currently licensed teachers should see Addendum A. Students who have a recent MLISdegree and wish to become a school library media specialist should see Addendum B.

Electives (5 semester hours)

The following list contains suggested electives, however, students should follow their own interest with approval of advisor. Students may choose electives based on their professional interests, or to increase skills and knowledge in particular areas. Electives may be selected from LIScourse catalogs or from other school or program areas.

Information for Students without Valid North Carolina Teaching Certificates

Students who are not currently licensed teachers will have to take additional coursework outside of the MLISprogram in order to obtain the Media Coordinator (076) licensure.

The additional coursework may be taken at any approved teacher education program with the approval of advisor. Undergraduate coursework is acceptable, but students may find graduate coursework more appropriate.

EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION COURSES: (6 credit hours)

Educational Foundations : Educational foundations relates to coursework studying the design and organization of school systems in the United States. Relevant courses may be entitled: The Institution of Education, Educational Foundations, or other titles relating to this subject.

Educational Psychology : Courses applicable to this area will cover how children learn and develop. Relevant courses may be Human Development, Educational Psychology, or other courses relating to this subject.

PRACTICUM:

Students who are pursuing media coordinator (076) licensure will need two 3-hour practica. One 3-hour practicum is considered part of the MLIScurriculum. The other practicum is outside of the MLISprogram. The student may wish to consider two different practica at two different locations, or do both at the same location and in the same semester. Regardless, the practicum should be at the very end of the student's program of study.

Information for Certification Only students

Students who currently hold a MLIS degree will need to consult with their advisor to develop a program of study leading to certification as Media Coordinator (076). Some considerations are these:

    • The length of time since the MLISdegree was awarded
    • Whether or not the student has been involved in professional library work
    • Future career goals of the student
